I missed out on the initial launch of the Lips & Boys Collection
so made sure to quickly place an order when the collection was
relaunched recently (in the UK its exclusive to Selfridges).
Though
I'd read and seen pictures on the difference in size, it was still a
surprise to see in the flesh just how mini these are (shown below with the regular size).
What is good
though is that the quality of the packaging is still the same as the
full size, just smaller, and the lipstick itself is a good size
rather than being really thin and fiddly to apply.
Money wise they
only work out slighter cheaper compared to the full size, these are
2 grams at £26 each whereas the standard lipsticks is 3 grams for
£37 each. I'd rather have a cheaper price and smaller amount
of product personally (good to have hope of using up a product....).
I bought the following shades:
Julian: cool toned, medium mauve pink with satin finish.
Olivier: cool toned, very pale lavender pink with
shimmer finish. I bought this to use as a topper for other
lipsticks to give a bit of interest as these types of shades are
too pale to use on their own with my complexion.
James: warm toned, medium coral with satin finish (this is meant
to be the same shade as Twist of Fate, which was a limited
edition shade for the 2014 Fall collection).
Flynn: neutral nude pink with satin finish.
Both Julian and James have the same texture/application of the
full size, they are creamy, with very good pigment and a long
wear time. Oliver and Flynn are of a slightly thinner
consistency and are not as pigmented.
I'm really not getting on
with Flynn, no matter how well I prep my lips it shows up lines
and dryness like a beast, it also applies a lot lighter that it
looks in the tube and swatch so washes me out.
Swatched L-R:Flynn, Olivier, James and Julian.
Its good that on the whole the quality remains the same compared to the full size, I just
wish I'd skipped Flynn and opted for a more colour intense
shade.
There are still quite a few shades left on the Selfridges site,
though I presume that once they are gone they are gone so bear
in mind if you are eyeing the collection up.
I bought these from http://www.selfridges.com/

Hey Clare, oh great, now I'm eyeing James!!! I got Francesco and Diego, and I'm trying not to get more (too many lipsticks, too little time). I wonder if the local store that carries the line will get more stock later, but I've been told they probably won't. Oh well, great news for the wallet!
ReplyDeleteI think James would really suit you, not to encourage you or anything :) I do feel tempted to pick up some more, they are quite cute really.
DeleteI've got Olivier and Flynn. I haven't had sun for pictures plus I have a cold but I hope they are right for me. I found them in the US at more places so it might be easier to get them here (Saks, Neiman, Nordstrom). I've got a few more coming since in general TF is my favorite formula. I hope I don't have the problems you did with Flynn but I like a lighter lipstick than you seem to like. Great photos.
ReplyDeleteThanks :)
DeleteYes, I think they are more accessible where you are, I was surprised really that we only had them out in the one place here and it has £6 delivery which is a bit annoying. You know I didn't even question getting flynn, so was rather surprised it didn't work for me, I've tried mixing it with other lipsticks as well but its still not working out for me so will be interested to hear how you get on with it as the reviews I read were mostly good for this shade so I was expecting it to perform better than it has.
I bought James too, I can't wait to see mine.
ReplyDeleteThat shade will suit you so well I bet :) Though its brighter than I'd normally go for I'd say its my favourite of the four I bought.
DeleteHi dear Clare! Julian is ths perfect shade for everyday. It seems very intense and resistant the colour! I'd like to try this brand, maybe when I'll have finished some of my lipsticks I use daily!
ReplyDeleteKisses and have a serene week-end!
Marghe
Hi Marghe, its a lovely shade, bit more cool toned than I'd normally wear though. I think you need at least one TF lipstick in your life :)
DeleteOf course!!! Now I'm finishing my Clarins, Elizabeth Arden and Collistar lipsticks, because I don't want them to dry absolutely! Then I'll surely try Tom Ford lipsticks
DeleteKisses :*
awesome collection. great post! thanks clare. I've got the Julian :)

Thanks :) I think Julian seems to be one of the most popular shades, I do wonder if they will bring out the best selling ones in the full size version at some point.
DeleteI purchased Flynn but ended up returning it because it made my lips look SO dry, which definitely put me off getting any others from the collection! I'm glad I'm not the only one who thought that about Flynn though :)
ReplyDeleteI do wish we could return things in the UK as Flynn would have gone back. Interesting that we had the same problem as a lot of reviews make no mention of it. As a whole it seems there is quite a difference in performance of these lipsticks depending on shades, I'm tempted to get some more but will have to do some thorough research first :)
DeleteThese look so pretty, but I just don't love the formula enough to justify the price. You picked great colors!
ReplyDeleteYes, TF is rather spendy and I agree that for the price you really need to like the formula, I wasn't keen at first with the formula of his normal lipsticks but have grown to really like it.
DeleteHi from California!!
ReplyDeleteMy first TF purchase was an impulse buy at NM of Julian. I really love this lipstick! Perfect color for me and love the formula. Hoping they bring this one on in the regular line.
Btw just found your blog--enjoying your reviews! We seem to have the same thoughts about how eye shadow should feel, apply and shade. Looking forward to binge reading your previous posts!
Hi, glad to hear you are enjoying Julian, mauve toned lipsticks can often look a bit off on me so was glad this one worked out.
DeleteNice to hear we have a similar viewpoint on makeup :)
