Tom Ford Lip Colour Shine Frolic

The Lip Shines are new for 2013 and are meant to provide a semi-transparent, high-shine colour veil.

The shade I bought, Frolic (£36) is a very sheer peach/pink and has a subtle shine finish. The texture is very smooth and glides on nicely, it has a cushioney feel somewhat akin to Chantecaille Lip Chics and has less slip than a Chanel Coco Shine.

Though it feels moisturising on, it can highlight dry areas, I also do not think it provides any conditioning/moisturising abilities that can be felt after the lipstick has worn off. Its not long lasting (maybe a tad more than a Chanel Coco Shine) but I don't expect lipsticks of this type to be. It has a strange scent, there is some fruitiness going on but mixed with that typical lipstick smell, I don't like it but only notice it when I am first applying the lipstick.

Swatched below with three swipes

Swatched below with a more peach shade (YSL glossy stain in #27 Peche Cerra Cola) to show the pinkness.

Overall it does have a good texture and nice feel and the shade, though very sheer, is flattering, so though I am not running out to buy more, I certainly wouldn't discount the range should another shade take my fancy, but I just don't think the qualities rise above the many other sheer lipsticks out there to account for the high price.

I bought this from Harrods.com

  1. the color, especially in the tube is super prettym though. I see you were not super impressed. Have you tried the new YSL or the new ByTerry ones yet, Replica? Curious to hear your thoughts! :)

  2. Hello,
Yes, nice to have but not a must have :)Do you mean the Rouge Volupté Shine, if so I bought one and thought it was not very good, highlights dry areas, too slippery and made my lips feel dry after it wore off, I have not got a By Terry one but will be ordering one very soon ;)

    1. Thanks! Yes, that's the YSL I meant! That's really good to know.

  3. It`s always such a dilemma for me, deciding between the versatility of a high-pigment lipstick, or the comfortable wear of a sheer lipstick. I'm getting more into sheer lipsticks because they really do feel GREAT on, but til now I've been pretty happy mixing opaque lipsticks with Jurlique Love Balm.

    1. I know what you mean, it would be great to have something with high pigment but the feel of a sheer.
I like the idea of mxing a balm with a more opaque lipstick, I'll have to give that a go :)

  4. Thanks for this great review :) These seemed okay to me, but (and more pigmented than the By Terrys!), but I agree, not particularly grabby.

    1. Thanks :) Yes, nice doesn't quite cut it for £36, I am starting to think that Tom Ford might not be a me brand ;)

  5. Darn. Too bad these aren't ideal for you!! The swatch color looks really pretty though!! I swatched all the colors and none of them really stood out. After reading a few reviews that were 'meh' about them, I'm kinda glad I wasn't thrilled with the colors. Better saved for other items I think!

    1. Yes, mind you I was going to order 3 of them initally so glad I went for just one, better to save the money, that it unless they come out with a unique shade of course ;)

  6. The color looks nice! I realize that this new range lipstick does not have the TF embossed on the top of the lipstick.
As much as I would love to get this, I just can't justify the price tag for a lipstick. Nevertheless, this is very beautiful <3

    1. I hadn't even thought about it not having the TF on it, see thats how much attention I pay :)
I am glad I tried one and do like this but I do find TF overpriced for what you get.

    2. Have you tried Suqqu lipstick? I wonder if they have the same quality.

    3. I have tried both of the Suqqu lipsticks, the TF is most similar to the Suqqu moist version, though Suqqu has a heavier feel and is more balmy, actually I wouldn't mind getting some more of the Suqqu now you mention it :)

  7. The color looks gorgeous. I'm happy with my Tom Ford lipsticks and don't notice a fragrance but I wouldn't be happy if I bought this and noticed a fragrance. What to do??

    1. tricky, probably would be best if you can have a sniff of them first, I am sure I read another review and they thought it had a sweet smell to it.

  8. I have yet to buy a thing from Tom Ford-- I think that I have been resistant because of the price. I'm willing to spend on cosmetics, but I still wonder about whether the quality and price are justifiable. That you aren't thrilled with this makes me wonder whether I want to take the TF plunge. Thanks for the excellent review, as always!

    1. Thank Lola :) I have to say that while I like the TF I have, I do not think its superior to my other brands and I think the pricing does not reflect the quality, one to test in store I think if you can x

  9. Replica, if I wanted to splurge on TF lipsticks I'd rather go for the opaque ones versus the sheer ones. That being said, it is a pretty shade but as you said perhaps not worth the price. Have you tried the YSL ones, they are very nice.

    1. I get the feeling TF is not really for me, though I will try the shadows at some point, you know for blog research :)
I bought one of the YSL Volupté Shine ones and don't really like it, I must be very fussy ;)

    1. Its a lovely shade for spring, though I have used quite a bit of it up already so not sure how long it will last me.

  11. This looks really pretty, I'm kind of half and half on sheer lipsticks - whether they're worth the splurge. I have a TF lipstick that I bought in a really neutral colour, so I could wear it all the time, and it's still in the box! So naughty!!

came across your blog on Modesty Brown's beauty spotlight, lovely to find a new blog to read.

    1. Thanks Sara, and welcome :) I am a fan of sheer lipsticks, though I do like the long wear of more opaque lipsticks, just need to combine them somehow :) Your poor TF stuck in its box ;) xx

  12. Hi Replica, I tried this on yesterday - at first glance it was my favorite of all the shades offered. I feel the same way, though - it is a pretty shade but I was expecting something a bit more impressive!

  13. Yes, I did have high expectations, still I do like the shade, I seem to be getting through it quite quickly though, I must be reapplying it more than I think ;)
